2025 SEO Trends: What's Actually Worth Your Time
September 15, 2025
Every year brings a wave of "SEO trends" posts, most of which recycle the same five predictions with a new year in the title. Here's what we're actually seeing move the needle across real client accounts, and what's mostly noise.
AI-generated overviews in search results are genuinely reshaping click behavior for informational queries — when an AI summary directly answers a question at the top of the results, click-through to the ranking pages below it measurably drops for that query. The practical response isn't panic, it's a shift in what you optimize for: structuring content so it's easy for these systems to extract and cite accurately, since being the cited source still carries some visibility and authority value even without the click.
Genuine expertise signals matter more than they used to. Content that reads as written by someone with real experience in a topic — specific numbers, named methods, described mistakes and what was learned from them — increasingly outperforms generic, competently-written-but-generic content, even when the generic version is longer or more comprehensively structured.
What's mostly noise: "voice search optimization" as its own discipline never materialized into a meaningfully distinct practice from good conventional SEO — the sites that rank for voice queries are simply the sites that already rank well for the equivalent typed query. Similarly, "optimize for zero-click searches" gets repeated every year without a concrete, actionable strategy attached to it beyond "write clear, direct answers," which is just good writing advice wearing a trend label.
The most consistently underrated lever, year after year regardless of algorithm shifts: page experience and genuine usefulness. Sites that solve the searcher's actual problem quickly and clearly continue to outperform sites chasing whatever the current tactical trend is, and that's held true across every major update we've tracked.
