How to Audit a Competitor's Backlink Profile in Under an Hour
March 5, 2025
Start by pulling the competitor's full backlink list and sorting by referring domain authority, highest first. Ignore anything below a domain authority you'd realistically be able to earn a link from yourself — auditing a competitor's links from major news outlets you have no realistic path to is interesting but not actionable.
Group the remaining links by type: guest posts, resource page mentions, directory listings, broken-link replacements, and editorial mentions earned organically (someone wrote about them without being asked). This categorization tells you which of their link-building tactics are actually working and repeatable versus one-off wins from PR or luck that you can't replicate on demand.
Resource page links are usually the highest-value, most replicable category to target first. If a competitor is listed on 15 different "best tools for X" resource pages, those pages are actively curating and updating lists in your exact niche — meaning they're plausible targets for your own outreach, and the fact that they already link to a competitor proves they're willing to link to companies like yours.
Check for patterns in anchor text across the link set. If a competitor consistently gets linked with anchors like "[Competitor Name]'s free calculator" or "[Competitor Name]'s template library," that tells you which specific asset or feature is earning links — often not their homepage or product page, but one specific free resource. That's frequently the actual thing worth building or improving on your own site, not the product page you'd default to promoting.
Finally, check link velocity over time — is the competitor's link count climbing steadily, spiking around specific content launches, or flat? A steady climb suggests an ongoing outreach program worth understanding in more depth; a spike suggests one successful piece of content or a PR moment, which points you toward analyzing that specific asset rather than their general strategy.
