Meta Descriptions That Actually Improve Click-Through Rate
January 19, 2025
A meta description isn't a ranking factor, but click-through rate is a strong behavioral signal, and the description is the single biggest lever you control over whether someone clicks your result instead of the one above or below it.
The description that gets ignored: a restatement of the title in slightly different words. "Learn about email marketing best practices for 2024" tells the searcher nothing they didn't already know from the title above it.
The description that gets clicked: a specific, concrete promise the title didn't already make. "12 subject line formulas that lifted open rates 18-40% across 200 client campaigns — with the exact wording" gives a specific number, a specific format, and a specific reason to believe it's not generic advice.
Keep it under 155 characters so it doesn't truncate — Google will cut it off mid-sentence past that, which looks unfinished and undermines the specific-promise approach above.
Include the target keyword naturally if it fits, since Google bolds matching terms in the search result, which draws the eye — but don't force it at the expense of making the sentence read naturally; a bolded keyword in an awkward sentence doesn't outperform a well-written sentence without it.
Match the description to actual search intent for that specific query, not a generic page summary. A page that ranks for both "email marketing tips" (informational) and "email marketing software" (commercial) might genuinely benefit from two different descriptions optimized per intent if the CMS supports it — though for most sites, picking the description that matches your primary target keyword's intent is the practical default.
One overlooked lever: numbers and specificity outperform vague superlatives almost every time in split tests. "The best guide to X" underperforms "7 tested methods for X, ranked by results" consistently enough that it's worth defaulting to the specific version whenever you genuinely have the specifics to back it up.
